Contrary to popular belief, snakes are generally not aggressive towards humans, and are not out to get you!
“Snakes are first cowards, then bluffers, and last of all warriors”
Snakes see humans as large predators, not prey! They will choose the nearest exit and try to flee, though sometimes their escape route is not ideal. If escape is impossible, snakes may defend themselves by hissing or striking.
Under the effects of adrenaline, bystanders may perceive a defensive or fleeing snake as charging or chasing them – but they are just trying to get themselves to safety!
If you come across a snake – stay calm and stay still! By standing still you are more or less unrecognisable and unlikely to provoke or frighten a snake. Leave them be and they will leave you alone!
