Snake Repellers

Sonic Guard Solar Snake Repeller with LED light

In-ground solar/ultrasonic snake repellers are marketed to those who want to keep snakes away from their properties – but do they work?

These repellers are designed to work by emitting a vibration and sometimes a sound, attempting to mimic larger predators and to make the snakes feel threatened. So what’s the issue?

  1. Snakes are sensitive to vibrations, that is correct, however repellers generally will emit a frequent and repetitive vibration, or will cycle through various different patterns. Snakes can, very quickly, associate consistent vibrations as just part of the normal and natural environment, and these vibrations can very easily fail to bother the snake at all.
  2. Snakes are predominantly deaf – snakes have no external ear openings, but they do have ear bones attached to their lower jaw that can pick up low frequency airborne sounds, as well as vibrations. Generally, the tones emitted by these repellers are not able to be picked up by snakes, or are not enough to bother them. These sounds are essentially for you to know that the device in on and “working”.

Though enticing and attractive, unfortunately these snake repellers have zero scientific studies or evidence to suggest that they are in any form an effective method of keeping snakes away.

Though there is no way to 100% guarantee a snake proof home, the best way to reduce snake activity around you is to remove food, shelter, and water sources that may entice them – this unfortunately means doing your household chores! Keep your yard clean, tidy, and free from clutter, and keep on top of any rodent infestations by utilising humane traps.
